James Bond, Spectre intro with Radiohead. Radiohead 's needs time to breathe in the mind, and it REALLY HELPS to watch this fan edit of the opener with Radiohead instead of Sam Smith: However, AT FIRST BLUSH, the Sam Smith song is probably the more accessible one, and immediately fitting one. Radiohead recorded an AWESOME song for the title sequence, but lost our to an UTTERLY MEDIOCRE song by Sam Smith. This argument is similar to the James Bond film Spectre: The lyrics are WAY on the nose, but that's the biggest criticism about it. MoP just "fits" better and is more accessible to more people, I'd bet. But.Įverything in your comment is right too. The OP is TOTALLY right and everything about The Trooper, which also happens to be THE song that I first recognized as Iron Maiden, and it is absolutely awesome and COULD HAVE worked in that scene. I would love to see a fan edit of that scene with The Trooper instead of MoP. The name of Iron Maiden’s “mascot,” who appears on pretty much every album cover (If I’m not mistaken), is “Eddie.” And obviously, there is an earlier scene where Eddie holds up an Iron Maiden cassette (I think Piece of Mind?) and declares that “THIS IS MUSIC!!!” There is a very strong connection between the character playing the song, and Iron Maiden. Would have been a no-brainer to interlace those scenes during the parts of the song where those things are referenced. Master of Puppets is too, which is why it worked very well, but The Trooper would have also been great in that regard.Ī big part of the Stranger Things story has involved conflict with Russians, and in that scene and surrounding scenes (if I recall correctly) there is a lot going on with Hopper and them in Russia. Lots of great riffs, and of course the epic solo. “Master of Puppets” kind of has one metaphor and the lyrics are descriptive in a way that fits the story, but it’s almost too “on the nose” and in my mind the tone of the song is a little campy (not necessarily a bad thing or out of character for the Stranger Things period-correct vibe) in a way that The Trooper is not, in the context of that scene. The Trooper tells a story of a vicious and horrific battle, and the lyrics give a progression that parallels what’s happening at that point in the Stranger Things story. The entire song is basically a battle cry, which fits the mood of the scene/montage and what’s going on in the story at that climactic moment. There are many reasons why this would have taken things over the top as the perfect song choice for that scene. The Trooper was released in 1983 and is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean war, and was inspired by Lord Tennyson’s 1854 poem of the same name. I think they should have gone with The Trooper by Iron Maiden. Obviously it’s an epic and well-known song, it’s an extremely fitting choice for Eddie’s character, and thematically it fits in terms of Vecna being the “puppet master”, etc.īut it’s not the first choice for the song I would have expected or hoped for. I don’t think anyone would doubt the fact that Master of Puppets was such a good choice for that scene. I’ll be the first to say that I about lost my mind when Eddie started playing Master of Puppets on top of the trailer.
